Don’t let inflation erode your emergency funds

According to data from the World Bank (www.data.worldbank.org) inflation in the United States has been at historically low levels, having peaked in 1980 at 13.5%, dropped to 1.9% by 1986, and has been less than 4% since 1992. For the past eight years, inflation has been 2% or less, being a mere 0.1% in 2015. With inflation as low as it has been in recent years, it was relatively safe and easy to ignore it, at least with respect to managing emergency funds, which were acceptable with yields of practically zero, to maximize safety and liquidity.
