Local food banks to receive menstrual product donations from Labour Council drive

In honour of International Women’s Week, the North Bay & District Labour Council is encouraging donations to ensure menstrual products are available for people accessing area food banks with its “Time Period” donation drive.  

The Labour Council is hosting the campaign this week and is accepting donations of hygiene products — to be distributed to local food banks in its service area. Cash donations are also welcome.

“Hygiene products are among the most requested — but least donated — products at food banks,” says campaign coordinator Amanda Farrow-Giroux. “We know that food bank use is up as a result of COVID-19 and we also know that women and people who menstruate have been most impacted by the economic effects of the pandemic.”

Farrow-Giroux is encouraging schools and workplaces to gather menstrual products or cash donations throughout International Women’s Week. COVID-19 precautions will be in place for drop-off at the drive-thru at 120 Lakeshore Drive (the CUPE offices) Saturday, March 13 between noon and 2 p.m. 

In observing International Women’s Week, Labour Council President Henri Giroux says, “We would like the acknowledge the work of women during this pandemic. Woman-dominated fields like retail, healthcare, and education have been among the most affected over the past year and we stand in solidarity as they work to make life better for us all.”
