Sainsbury's shopper reveals £1 coin hack to reduce price of supermarket receipt

We all like to save a bit of money here and there and it’s even better when a simple trick allows you to do so.

One Sainsbury’s shopper showed off a clever £1 hack that could reduce the price of your weekly shop.

To try the hack you’ll need a Nectar card and a quid.

Then all you need to do is scan your Nectar card and pay for just one item at the till – instead of your whole shop – and see if you’re given a coupon.

In her example, the shopper says she purchased something that cost £1 and was given a £4.50 voucher in return.

This means she can then use this money-off coupon against the rest of her shop, or a larger spend next time she is in store.

Writing on the Money saving hints, tips and ideas Facebook group, she said: “I don’t shop at Sainsbury’s often, but when I do, I pay for one item first, which is just over a £1.

“I usually then get a money off voucher for my next shop, today it was £4.50. Hope this is helpful.”

If you’re thinking of trying this hack out, keep in mind there is no guarantee you’ll get a voucher each time you make a purchase.

The amount of money you can get in the form of a voucher is also random, reports the Mirror.

To see if you’re in luck, scan your Nectar card before paying for your item and keep an eye out for any coupons.

Coupons for Sainsbury’s can be used both in-store and online, found in a coupon wallet linked to your Nectar Card.

Other shoppers have been left impressed by the supermarket trick.

One person said: “I’ve never thought to do this! Will definitely keep it in mind now, thank you.”

Another said: “That’s a great help, will remember that. I just end up with loads of vouchers that are useless until you shop again.”

We wonder whether Sainsbury’s will pick up on this and amend their systems, but it seems like a tough manoeuvre.

The Nectar loyalty scheme is free to sign up to online and allows you to collect points that can be exchanged for money off your shop – this is on top of any coupons that are randomly printed after you’ve paid for something.

One Nectar point is worth 0.5p, which means 100 points would convert into 50p to spend.

There are around 18 million customers signed up to Nectar, and the points you collect can be used in multiple stores and online retailers, such as Argos and eBay.
